VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

Questions?

Please call us at (570) 374-0181 to learn more about our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $55,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

  • Annual income cannot exceed $55,000 (amount subject to change by year)

  • VITA is limited to those filing non-itemized tax returns only

  • VITA volunteers can also assist in preparing Pennsylvania Property Tax or Rent Rebate program forms; eligible persons may receive a rebate of up to $650

  • Union-Snyder CAA VITA is available to residents of Snyder and Union Counties

How to schedule an appointment:

Customers can start scheduling appointments in mid-January of each year. VITA is available at locations in Selinsgrove and Lewisburg. Please call (570) 374-0181 to schedule your appointment.

COVID-19 ADJUSTMENTS FOR VITA 2021

Due to COVID-19, CAA is doing curbside service only for VITA in 2021. We will have no volunteers in our building at Snyder East or the Lewisburg Government Center; rather, all volunteers will process and submit taxes using secure remote software following our IRS-approved virtual plan.

What to expect:

  1. Customers must still call our office to schedule a curbside drop-off appointment (appointments will start as early as February 1, 2021).

  2. At this appointment, customers are not to enter the building. Our VITA Site Coordinator, Adam, will meet you outside at your car to do the following:

    • Sign forms allowing us to file your return

    • Collect basic information

    • Scan documents into our secure tax return software (click here for a list of required documents)

    • Schedule a time when the Volunteer Preparer will call you over phone or Zoom to collect follow-up information

  3. You will be contacted when your return is completed. At that time, we will schedule a time to review your return for accuracy and sign off on the return prior to filing.

For questions, please contact Adam Ruby, Site Coordinator, at aruby@union-snydercaa.org or (570) 374-0181. Thank you for your patience as we shift our operations to ensure safe and efficient tax preparation for you in 2021.

What to Bring to Your Appointment:
  • Social security card for everyone on the return

  • ALL incomes documents (i.e. W-2, etc.)

  • Blank check if you'd like a direct deposit (routing, accounting number required)

PLEASE NOTE: Documents will be scanned and returned to you at the time of your initial curbside appointment. Scanned copies will be stored in a secure software utilized by the IRS, and permanently deleted within 14 days of successful e-filing.
