Our Mission...
is to affirm the dignity of all individuals, families, and communities and to facilitate their development with opportunities to determine and achieve their own goals. The Union - Snyder Community Action Agency works in partnership with consumers, agencies, and communities to address and alleviate the causes and impacts of poverty.

As a Community Action Agency, Our two main functions are...

  1. to provide self-sufficiency
    and stability services to
    low-income individuals including
    the homeless, the working poor,
the unemployed, and those unable to work

  2. to provide community education, organization,
revitalization, and development services to assist
residents and communities in addressing local needs

The Union - Snyder Community Action Agency was formed in 1979 through a joint effort of the Union and Snyder County Commissioners and concerned citizens. The Joinder Board of Commissioners has governed  the Union - Snyder Community Action Agency since its inception, with input from an Advisory Committee of community, low-income, and local government representatives. Needs Assessment Survey Results-2008

Union-Snyder Community Action Agency (CAA) conducted a 2008 Community Needs Survey to gather community input on needs and concerns regarding the Union-Snyder area. The survey began in January 2008 through a service project by CAA’s CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps. Twenty AmeriCorps members in five teams went into the communities and conducted the survey through interviews with 100 local residents.

The survey was then available through paper copies at community sites, and online with links through websites including school districts and the courthouses.

Two main queries were presented within the survey, each separated into multiple subquestions. The first question-set asked respondents  “How great of a problem is each of the following in the Union-Snyder area?”. The second question-set asked respondents “WHAT PRIORITY DO YOU THINK SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE PROGRAMS THAT ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING CONCERNS?”. Problems and concerns ranged from job training and creation, to youth programs, to health issues, to public transportation, to child care.

The report provides an in-depth analysis of the responses. Overall, the top five problem as reported by the 415 respondents are finding jobs that provide a living wage, health insurance (no health insurance, or high costs), drug and/or alcohol abuse, stretching food dollars, and public transportation. The top five program priorities are drug and alcohol abuse, job creation, child abuse prevention, domestic violence, and affordable child care.
