MAY 2013 NATIONAL COMMUNITY ACTION MONTH

The Promise of Community Action

Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.

The national office of the Community Action Partnership designates May as National Community Action Month to recognize Community Action Agencies’ work fighting poverty on the local level. Each year, Community Action Agencies help millions of Americans achieve and maintain financial stability through programs such as Head Start, weatherization, work readiness and life skills training, literacy and financial education, housing, energy and transportation assistance.

Services offered by Community Action Agencies across the country are critical, especially when there are millions of people facing an uncertain economic future.  These are the same people who have worked hard and played by the rules, but now the pressures of long-term unemployment, foreclosures, and dwindling savings are putting a tremendous strain on them.  Programs like Community Action are vital to empowering families to move from struggling and just getting by to stability and independence.

Working to end poverty in a community is far more than any agency can do alone. In fact, poverty touches every facet of a community: government, business, schools, churches, hospitals, and agencies.  It impacts the tax base and the housing market.  It touches everyone. Because the impact is so big, it requires all of us looking for effective solutions and strategies.

We are fortunate in Snyder and Union Counties that we don’t work to end poverty alone. Our partners in education, local government, social services, business  and the faith community, as well as, our many volunteers are what enable us to work together to make substantial changes in our community.

We celebrate 35 years of serving the community!

Our Mission...
is to affirm the dignity of all individuals, families, and communities and to facilitate their development with opportunities to determine and achieve their own goals. The Union - Snyder Community Action Agency works in partnership with consumers, agencies, and communities to address and alleviate the causes and impacts of poverty.

As a Community Action Agency, Our two main functions are...

  1. to provide self-sufficiency
    and stability services to
    low-income individuals including
    the homeless, the working poor,
the unemployed, and those unable to work

  2. to provide community education, organization,
revitalization, and development services to assist
residents and communities in addressing local needs

The Union - Snyder Community Action Agency was formed in 1979 through a joint effort of the Union and Snyder County Commissioners and concerned citizens. The Joinder Board of Commissioners has governed  the Union - Snyder Community Action Agency since its inception, with input from an Advisory Committee of community, low-income, and local government representatives. Agency funding comes from local, state, and federal sources.
